W4 Area Governor & Immediate Past President's Message

Dear MBTC Members,
As we enter into the new year under the leadership of our very capable President Peter Ong, I would like to thank you for the support and assistance given during my term, 2010/12. At the same time, I would like to call on everyone in this great club of ours to throw our support unreservedly for President Peter Ong.

President Peter has demonstrated great ability and commitment while serving as our club’s Vice-president, Education last year and his experiences would definitely enable him to serve our club well as our President.

Although we managed to achieve the Presidential Distinguished Club Award last year, we missed out on our goal of maintaining the record of our two past presidents of 10 out of 10 points. We only managed to achieve 9 out of 10. Thus, we are 1 point below and this could have been achieved had each of us invited more guests and be more committed to contribute to the growth of our membership. I take full responsibility for this shortfall and would like to urge each of us, including myself, to start early and start inviting our relatives, friends, and colleagues to attend our meetings so that we will gain the growth to beyond the 8 required by 30th December 2011. We can if we thin we can and also take the necessary. I am sure President Peter will lead us by example.

Also, our District 51 under the leadership of our District Governor, Sue Chan, has challenged us to achieve the Passion Drive 1 which has 5 requirements and the attainment of these by 30 September 2011 will earn our club the rebranded TI banner which is worth US100.00. The requirements are as follows:

1. Have at least 4 Exco. members to attend TLI

2. Achieve 2 educational goals (CC or Advanced Communicator)

3. Full year renewal of 15 members by October 2011

4. Enroll at least 5 new members by October 2011

5. Provide 5 new club leads

Also, there is a Passion Drive 2 which will give a bonus of US50.00 if our club can charter a new club within the 1st three months of the new term.

Well, lots of goodies to get and all we have to do is take simple action that are really not difficult to perform.

Let’s have a great year and Speak Together and Grow Together!

Cheers!

President's message

First of all, I would like to thank all club members and Advisers who have given me this opportunity to serve our Club as its President.
I joined MBTC in June 2009 and never dreamt that I will become the President of this wonderful Club so soon. I am really honoured and privileged to be able to serve our Club.

Our club theme for this term is Speak together to Grow Together一起演说共同成长 (pinyin: Yì qǐ yǎn shuō gong tong chéng zhǎng.) while our club vision is for our new members to flourish in a supportive club atmosphere, and that senior members continue to pursue their Toastmaster goals.

Our mission is Not One Less一个都不能少(pinyin: yíge dōu bùnéng shǎo). So we will serve hand in hand and together we will ensure all members grow in capability and confidence. We will ensure that all members in our Toastmaster Journey achieve fulfillment & have rewarding experiences.

I look forward to each of your support for our Club and for each other, and grow together in achieving our Toastmasters goals.

Let’s Speak Together and Grow Together!

How a Cocktail Napkin Can Make You a Better Speaker by Ken Okel | Metropolitan Bilingual Toastmasters Club

Who says a speaking tool needs to be expensive? A cocktail napkin can not only help you improve your talk but can also come in handy should something be spilled. Here are some quick tips on how it can make a big difference in your presentation:

Use it to review your main points. Can you write down your themes? Do you find yourself covering the napkin with words? That probably means that your points are not focused enough. You want to include only your main concepts, like you'd see on an outline. By working on such a small canvas, you're forced to make sure you're only covering the three or so topics that you most want your audience to remember. Of course each topic will have supporting points but you should know that information.

Use it as a reminder. I'm not a big fan of using scripts for speeches. I think communication works best when you know your topic and have an outline in your mind of what you want to talk about. If you know your material and have practiced, you should be able to survive without a script. But the napkin can also serve as a security blanket should you go blank on one of your points. Plus, writing things down often can help you lock it into your mind.

Use it to take notes. Prior to your presentation, you might think of some new idea that you want to add to your speech. Or you might hear something that you want to reference in your talk. If only you had a place to jot down these thoughts? But wait, you do! A napkin has two sides and you can use one of them for these last minute notes.

4 Simple Steps to More Impactful Speech Content by Edward Hope | Metropolitan Bilingual Toastmasters Club

The process of developing the content of your speech is fundamentally important to effective public speaking. Meaningful content is critical to writing a great speech and without it the presenting skills of voice, language, body language and gestures are of little use to the listeners or the speaker.
The process of developing the content of your speech can be frustrating and use up a vast amount of time. But you can use a 4 step process to simplify and streamline the development of content for your speech.

1. Decide on the Purpose
The purpose of the speech must justify the time and energy put into it by you as speaker and by the audience listening to it. The speech purpose needs to answer the question "What will this presentation do for my audience? The considerations to keep in mind when deciding on the purpose are;-
(i) How will the presentation benefit the audience?
(ii) Is it appropriate for the audience?
(iii) Is the speech being given for entertainment or is a specific action wanted from the audience
(iv) The circumstances and situation of the speech, e.g. at a charity fund raising event your talk will be delivered to raise money

2. Developing the Theme
Your theme should be stated in a clear, brief and meaningful statement. The theme chosen must be able to be developed to accomplish the purpose. To develop the theme you will need to keep in mind a clear picture of the audience and in your judgement
  • Has the greatest influence on your audience
  • It can be developed successfully for your audience
  • It supports the purpose
  • The audience characteristics such as age, number, experience, attitude etc
3. Selecting the Style of The Presentation
The style(s) chosen to deliver your speech must support the purpose of the speech and it will determine the type of information you need to gather in the research step.
There are 2 criteria you can use to select the style of your speech:
  • The purpose for speaking
  • Audience's attitude and understanding
The 5 styles that can be used in delivering your speech are:
  • Humor - the principal idea is to entertain the audience
  • Narrative - used to tell a story of people, places and events
  • Exposition - used to describe, explain or demonstrate an idea
  • Argument - presentation of facts and other evidence to support your ideas
  • Motivation - uses emotional appeals to the audience to take a certain action
Humor and narration are more likely to be utilised when the audience is to be entertained. Argument and motivation are usually used when a specific action is wanted from the audience.

4. Research
The goal of research is to uncover information to support and justify the theme and ideas of the speech. The first step in research is to develop a rough outline of your speech so that the research is properly focussed.
The primary source of information should be your own experiences. Once you have exhausted your experience, there are many other sources of information that can be utilised. The other sources include books, films, TV, interviewing other people and of course the internet. When using these sources it is important to use your judgement as to the validity of the information.
You will now have the content necessary to outline, organize and write and deliver your speech. Mastery of the process of developing the content will enable you to write and deliver a speech that is of benefit to the audience. With the knowledge that your content is valuable to your listeners your confidence will increase and you will enjoy the experience of public speaking more.
